Oldmans Creek

For overview, importance and history of Oldmans Creek and watershed, visit www.sjwatersheds.org/watershedorgs/oldmans.htm

Located south of the Commodore Barry Bride, Oldmans creek fishing and boat access is accessible via New Jersey Route 130. The creek is 20 miles long and acts as the natural boundary between Salem and Gloucester counties.

Oldmans Creek drains 44 square miles of forest and agricultural lands, and flows on the coastal plain, an area characterized by underformed sedimentary rocks, and sandy, acidic soils, to the Delaware River. A source for two major lakes, Oldmans creek is also a stopover for migrating waterfowl such as the Great blue Heron, Great Egret, and Red-Winged Blackbirds.

New Jersey Waters.com classifies water quality as "good" with slightly elevated nutrient and bacteria levels. These elevated levels are the result of numerous point source and non-point sources of pollution from chemical factories, and agricultural runoff. Water quality problems are focused mainly in the tidal portions of the creek. Contaminants include fecal coliform, total phosphorus, and pH. For more information on Oldmans Creek water quality please visit www.njwaters.com/wma/18.htm A permit is required to enter the tidal basins at the mouth of the creek, which provide an opportunity for fishing and small boat access.

A visit to Oldmans Creek in February revealed something similar to a mud pot. The maze of dirt roads was in poor condition, but suitable for a nice 4-wheel drive outing; however, beware of state laws prohibiting off roading on state lands. Boat access is possible if you can find your way to the broken, concrete ramp; although, I would recommend a guide- boat, canoe, or rowboat. Avoid this area during and after a heavy rain and be sure to notify other parties of your intentions, and whereabouts while visiting Oldmans Creek.
